AI phone answering for food trucks, bakeries and cafes

A food truck, bakery or cafe should use AI phone answering when calls are missed while hands are full and those calls carry money: custom cake orders, catering, large pickup orders or event bookings. If most calls are "where are you parked today?" or "are you open?", a free voicemail greeting and an up-to-date Google profile do the job.

Published prices in October 2026 run from 2% per order (Serviio) to $79 to $350 a month (Goodcall, Smith.ai, Maple).

What it costs, from the vendors' own pages

Serviio2% of each order it submits to your POS. No monthly fee. 3-month free trial. Lists Clover, Square, Toast and others. Restaurant and cafe focused.
MapleVoice $150 a month for answering only. Pro $350 a month for POS ordering and payment on the call. Lower if paid yearly ($85 / $220).
Goodcall$79 a month for 100 unique callers, $129 for 500. Not restaurant specific. Good for booking and messages.
Smith.ai AIFree for 25 calls a month, then $150 Pro. Not restaurant specific. Good for event and consult booking.

So what do you do? A bakery that gets 10 custom-cake calls a month may fit inside Smith.ai's free 25 calls. A busy cafe taking phone pickup orders is better off with a tool that writes the order straight into the POS, so nobody retypes it during the rush.

Setup

Five things to give the AI before it answers a single call

  1. Your real hours and locations. For a truck, a daily schedule it can read. Wrong hours are the fastest way to lose trust.
  2. Your menu with prices and what sells out. "Do you have sourdough today?" needs a real answer or an honest "call back after 9".
  3. Lead times. How many days' notice for a custom cake, a catering tray or an event.
  4. The questions for big orders. Date, headcount, pickup or delivery, budget, allergies. The AI collects them all so you call back once.
  5. Where it sends things. Text to the owner's phone, an email, or straight into the POS.
The honest part

Where AI phones fall short for small food businesses

Limits to plan around

  • Noisy lines from trucks and festivals cause misheard names and numbers.
  • Custom designs and pricing still need a person to confirm.
  • "What is fresh right now?" needs live stock data most small shops do not have.
  • Expect a ramp. Our own phone host ran alongside staff while it was tuned.

Where it pays back fastest

  • Calls during the rush that nobody can pick up.
  • Calls after close for tomorrow's orders.
  • Big orders that need five details collected before a call-back.
  • Repeat customers who order the same thing.

Questions owners ask

Do food trucks need an AI phone answering service?

Only if calls carry money. Most food truck calls ask where the truck is parked, which a daily Google and social post answers for free. If you book private events or office lunches by phone, an AI answerer that collects the date, headcount and budget means you call back once with a quote.

Can an AI take custom cake orders for a bakery?

It can take the brief: date, servings, flavor, design idea, budget and allergies, then book a consult or text it to you. A person should still confirm the design and price. Smith.ai's free plan covers 25 calls a month, enough for many small bakeries.

What is the cheapest AI phone answering for a cafe?

Serviio charges no monthly fee, 2% of each order it submits, with a three-month free trial. Smith.ai has a free 25-call plan for answering and booking. Maple Voice is $150 a month for answering only. Prices are from vendor pages, October 2026.

Can AI phone answering put orders into Square or Clover?

Yes for some tools. Serviio lists Clover, Square and Toast. Maple Pro lists Toast, Square, Clover and Shift4. General receptionists like Goodcall and Smith.ai book and take messages but are not built to write orders into a restaurant POS.

Is voicemail enough for a small bakery or cafe?

Often, yes, if your Google profile shows correct hours and most calls are simple questions. Upgrade when you notice missed calls costing you real orders, like catering or custom cakes, or when you spend more than an hour a day returning calls.

How do I stop an AI answerer giving wrong hours or locations?

Give it one source of truth and keep it current: posted hours, holiday closures, and for a truck a daily schedule. Test it by calling yourself after every change. Wrong hours lose trust faster than a missed call.
