Multilingual phone ordering for South Asian and Hispanic restaurants

Let the caller choose their language in the greeting, keep the whole call in that language unless they switch, keep dish names as your guests say them, and send the pay text in the same language. Spanish is widely supported by AI phone vendors. Hindi is rare and none of the vendor pages we read names Urdu, so ask any vendor for a test call in your guests' language before you sign.

Who is calling

Why language matters on the phone

In 2024 about 74.1 million people in the US, 23% of everyone aged five and up, spoke a language other than English at home, and 44.9 million of them spoke Spanish (American Community Survey via USAFacts). About 4 in 10 of those speakers said they speak English less than "very well".

For a South Asian or Hispanic restaurant the share of such callers is usually far higher than the national figure. A phone call is where language bites hardest: no pictures, no pointing at the menu, and background noise on both ends.

Step by step

How to set it up for your guests

Count your languages

Ask staff which languages callers use, and check your reviews and order names. Pick the two or three that matter.

Test each vendor in those languages

Call the demo line yourself or with a native speaker. Order your hardest dish, ask about halal or spice, and change your mind mid-order.

Write the answers once per language

Hours, location, halal status, spice levels, catering minimums. Keep dish names in their original form.

Translate the pay text and menu

The text with the pay link, the receipt and the menu should appear in the caller's language and script.

Print kitchen tickets in one language

Whatever the guest spoke, the ticket stays in the language your cooks read.

Review non-English calls weekly

These are the calls most likely to go wrong early. Have a speaker listen to a sample every week during the first three months.

The hard parts

What breaks in Urdu, Hindi and Spanish calls

  • Callers mix languages. Many guests speak Urdu or Hindi with English words for dishes and numbers, or Spanish with English street names. The system has to follow the mix without flipping the whole call to English.
  • Spoken alike, written apart. Spoken Hindi and Urdu are very close. Written, Hindi uses Devanagari left to right and Urdu uses Nastaliq right to left. The pay text and menu must use the script the guest reads.
  • Dish names must not be translated. Karahi, nihari, haleem, birria and pozole are names. Translating them confuses the guest and the kitchen.
  • Halal and spice questions come first. Have exact answers written down in every language you support.
  • One language per call. Switching back and forth mid-call loses people. We hold the chosen language and switch only when the caller asks.
  • The kitchen reads English. Whatever language the guest orders in, the ticket should print in the kitchen's language.
Where we are

What runs today at our proof restaurant

The table and online menu run in English plus Urdu, Hindi, Gujarati, Punjabi, Arabic and Spanish, and an older guest can talk to the assistant to add dishes. On the phone, the greeting offers Urdu, Hindi and Spanish. Phone calls in those languages are still few, and the guard that keeps a call in the chosen language is in testing. When we set this up for another restaurant we test with real speakers of your guests' languages before switching it on, and run it alongside your staff for about three months.

Questions owners ask

Can AI take phone orders in Spanish?

Yes. Several AI phone vendors support Spanish. Test with your own menu and a native speaker before signing.

Is there an AI phone host that speaks Urdu?

None of the vendor pages we read in October 2026 names Urdu. AZ's phone host offers Urdu, Hindi and Spanish at the greeting; non-English calling is the newest part of our system and still being tuned.

Are Hindi and Urdu the same for phone ordering?

Spoken, they are very close, so one voice can often serve both. Written, they use different scripts and directions, so pay texts and menus need both versions.

Should dish names be translated?

No. Guests and cooks know karahi, nihari or birria by name. Translate the description, keep the name.

What if the caller switches languages mid-call?

Follow the caller's request to switch, but do not switch on your own. Holding one language per call keeps the order clear.
