Restaurant loyalty programs pay back 9%: what it means for independent restaurants
The Points Guy's "State of Loyalty 2026" report, covered on October 23, 2026, found that restaurant rewards programs give back a median of 9% of what a guest spends, about three times retail's median of roughly 3% (Nation's Restaurant News, Oct 23, 2026, checked Oct 2026).
Guests want free food most, and only half of rewards members say a program changes where they eat. For an independent restaurant, a simple reward that arrives early does more than a points scheme, and taste and accuracy still decide the visit.
What the big programs give back
The Points Guy, a travel and rewards site, worked out the return on spending for 10 of the largest restaurant programs and surveyed guests about how they use them. The return below is the value of the reward divided by what you have to spend to earn it.
| Program | What you spend | What you get | Return |
|---|---|---|---|
| Domino's Rewards | $11.56 | Free 20-oz soda ($2.89) | 25% |
| MyMcDonald's Rewards | $15 | Free hash browns ($2.49) | 16.6% |
| Starbucks Rewards | Not given | Not given | 6% |
| Chipotle Rewards | $35 | Free chips ($1.95) | 5.6% |
| Subway Sub Club | $40 | $2 back | 5% |
| Median dining program | Across the 10 programs studied | 9% | |

Four findings that matter more than the ranking
Free food wins
84% of guests named free food as the top benefit. 74% chose a dollar discount on the whole bill.
Restaurants get used
Restaurant programs had 47% of guests enrolled and 22% redeeming regularly, ahead of fuel, retail, airline and hotel programs.
Loyalty is not the reason
Only 50% of dining rewards members said a program affected where they eat.
Food still decides
A Technomic study in the same article found 90% call taste and quality important or very important, ahead of portion, accuracy, service, cleanliness and value. Loyalty ranked below all of them.

What an independent should copy, and what to skip
| Chain habit | Copy or skip | Why |
|---|---|---|
| A first reward that arrives fast (Domino's) | Copy | A guest who earns something on the second visit has a reason for a third. A reward 10 visits away is easy to forget. |
| The reward is a food item | Copy | Free food is what guests value most, and a drink or side costs you far less than its menu price. |
| Points tables and tiers | Skip | Tiers suit chains with millions of members. A neighbourhood restaurant needs one rule a guest can remember. |
| A separate app to download | Skip | Most guests will not install an app for one restaurant. A phone number at checkout is enough to know who came back. |
| Discounts for everyone, all the time | Skip | Your regulars already come. Spend the reward on guests who have not been back in a while. |

A simple reward in five steps
- Pick one reward with a real cost under a few dollars.A drink, a dessert, a side. Work out what it costs you, not what it sells for.
- Make it reachable in two or three visits.A fast first reward does more than a big one far away.
- Use the phone number as the card.Ask for it at checkout, on the ordering page and on the phone. No app, no plastic.
- Text the guest when the reward is ready.A reward the guest forgets about brings nobody back.
- Check who came back after 30 days.Count repeat guests before and after. If the number does not move, change the reward.

A guest list that knows who came back
AZ is a forward-deployed technology partner for independent restaurants. We connect ordering, the phone and the table to one guest list on the POS you already use, then set up rewards and win-back texts that run on their own. At our proof restaurant in Houston, the system knows most guests by name and phone number.
