Google Maps Fan-Favorite lists: what they mean for independent restaurants

On October 8, 2026 Google Maps published its first Fan-Favorite Dining Lists for 10 cities, built from Google Maps reviews, ratings and direction requests between September 1, 2025 and August 31, 2026 (Nation's Restaurant News, Oct 8, 2026, checked Oct 2026).

No Texas city is on the first list. The same kinds of signals already feed the Trending, Gems and Top lists in the Maps Explore tab, which Google updates weekly (Google blog, Oct 8, 2026, checked Oct 2026). Reviews and direction taps are how Google picks restaurants to show, and you can grow both this month.

What Google counts

The signals, and what you control

Google has not published ranking weights. These are the inputs it named for the Fan-Favorite lists and for Ask Maps, its feature that matches a described craving to "photos, reviews, and menus."

SignalWhat it isWhat you can do
Reviews and ratingsStar ratings and written reviews on your Google profile.Ask every happy guest at the right moment, and reply to every review.
Direction requestsTaps on "Directions" from your Maps listing.Keep the pin, hours and parking notes right so people who look also come.
Dish mentionsThe dish names guests write in reviews. Google built a "Trending in Reviews" category from them.Name your signature dish on the menu, the receipt and the review ask.
PhotosOwner and guest photos on the listing.Post real dish photos with the dish name in the caption.
MenuThe menu on your Google profile.Keep it complete and current, with prices and descriptions.
Recent popularityThe weekly Trending list covers places that "have recently spiked in popularity."Time pushes (events, new dishes) so the traffic shows up in one week.

So what for one restaurant

Why this matters even outside the 10 cities

The weekly lists cover you now

Trending, Gems and Top lists in the Explore tab update every week. A restaurant in Houston or Dallas can show up there today.

Reviews became a ranking input in public

Google said in plain words that reviews, ratings and direction requests built these lists. Treat the review count as a sales channel.

Dishes get found, not just restaurants

"Trending in Reviews" picks out single dishes. A guest who writes the dish name helps the next guest who searches for it.

The profile is the front door

Maps can send a guest to order through Uber Eats, Toast or Square from the listing. Check which ordering link your profile shows, and whether it is the one that costs you a commission.

What to do this month

Eight steps to get on Google's lists

  1. Claim and complete your profile.Hours, holiday hours, phone, website, menu, attributes. Our Google Maps step-by-step covers every field.
  2. Ask for reviews at the right moment.Right after a guest pays and is happy, with one tap to the review form. Our reviews guide shows the timing.
  3. Send unhappy guests to you first.A private line to the owner lets you fix the problem. Keep your public review link available to everyone, as Google's policy expects.
  4. Reply to every review.Short, specific, signed. Mention the dish they named.
  5. Make one dish famous.Pick it, name it the same way everywhere, and ask guests to mention it.
  6. Post real photos every month.Dish name in the caption. Old or stock photos hurt more than they help.
  7. Check the ordering link on your profile.Point it to your own ordering page if you have one.
  8. Track direction requests and calls weekly.Your Business Profile performance view shows both. Watch them like sales.

AI assistants read the same reviews and menus. Our guide on getting recommended by AI covers that side, and local SEO for restaurants covers the website side.

Questions owners ask

What are Google Maps Fan-Favorite lists?

They are Google Maps' first annual dining lists, published on October 8, 2026 for 10 cities. Google built them from Maps reviews, ratings and aggregated direction requests between September 1, 2025 and August 31, 2026, plus a final verification step.

Is Houston on the Google Maps Fan-Favorite list?

No. The first list covers Atlanta, Chicago, London, Melbourne, Montreal, New York, San Francisco, Santiago, Seattle and Tokyo. Restaurants anywhere can still appear in the weekly Trending, Gems and Top lists in the Maps Explore tab.

How does a restaurant get on Google Maps lists?

Google has not published ranking weights. It named reviews, ratings and direction requests for the Fan-Favorite lists, and photos, reviews and menus for Ask Maps. A complete profile, a steady flow of reviews and accurate directions are the parts you control.

Can I pay to be on a Fan-Favorite list?

Google's announcement describes the lists as built from Maps data and a verification step. Nothing in it mentions paid placement.

Do direction requests really matter?

Google named aggregated direction requests as one of the inputs for the Fan-Favorite lists. Keep your pin, hours and address right so people who look you up can actually get there.
